Health Minute: Driving and Community Mobility

Health Minute logo

WPSU’s Health Minute is a collaboration with Penn State’s Ross and Carol Nese College of Nursing.

Have you noticed yourself or a loved one becoming more fearful getting behind the driver’s wheel as you get older?

According to the Centers for Disease Control, in 2018 there were more than 45 million licensed drivers on the road over the age of 65. For most Americans, driving and being able to get around in the community are connected with independence and a sense of worth.

But normal age-related changes can affect our ability to drive.

If you notice changes in vision, difficulty getting in or out of a car or bus, episodes of confusion about where you are, or fear of driving, reach out to your primary care provider to discuss modifications to keep you safe behind the wheel.

Visit the American Occupational Therapy Association website for more information.
