Health Minute: National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

Health Minute logo

WPSU’s Health Minute is a collaboration with Penn State’s Ross and Carol Nese College of Nursing.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is April 30th.

According to a national survey, in a recent year nearly 10 million people misused prescription pain relievers, nearly 5 million misused prescription stimulants, and nearly 6 million misused prescription tranquilizers or sedatives.

A majority of misused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet. You can help prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths by checking your medicine cabinet.

“Take Back” all unused, unwanted, and expired medication to a participating local law enforcement agency or pharmacy. They will dispose of medications in a safe and environmentally responsible way. To find a participating location visit deaTakeBack.com.

Cheraine Stanford is the Content Strategy Director at WPSU, responsible for developing the station's original productions across digital, radio and television.
