Health Minute: National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

Health Minute logo

WPSU’s Health Minute is a collaboration with Penn State’s Ross and Carol Nese College of Nursing.

February 7th is National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. According to the Centers for Disease Control more than 40% of new HIV diagnoses were among Black populations.

Racism, discrimination, and mistrust in the health care system may affect whether people receive HIV prevention and treatment. There are many ways to reduce the risk of contracting HIV including using condoms, clean needles, and correctly taking medications including PrEP. Another medication can help protect you within 72 hours of an exposure.

If you have HIV, treatment can help keep you healthy and reduce your chance of passing it to someone else.
