In August, the self-proclaimed Islamic State seized the city of Sinjar, home to many minority Yazidis, one of the oldest monotheistic religions in the world. Tens of thousands of Yazidis fled to Mount Sinjar.
Others who tried to stay were captured and killed. A few weeks ago, Kurdish forces broke the siege of the mountain and have retaken a quarter of the northern side of city of Sinjar back from ISIS forces.
But the street fight to take full control of the city continues. The BBC’s Jiyar Gol has been given exclusive access to the Kurdish frontline in the old city of Sinjar, and brought us this report.
