In the wake of Penn State fraternity member Timothy Piazza’s hazing death in February, the Interfraternity Council is hosting Anti-Hazing Week.

At the bustling HUB-Robeson Center Wednesday afternoon, students signed a pledge against hazing.

Devon McDuffy signed the pledge. She said after what happened to Piazza, the community must come together to understand hazing has always been a problem.

“Hazing unfortunately has been so embedded into the community of fraternities and sororities that even at this point in time, it’ll take a lot to, like, truly get it to stop,” McDuffy said.

Delta Upsilon President Matt Lownes said if students sign the pledge, it holds them accountable.

“We need to take a stand against hazing,” he said. “Unfortunately, someone died here, and it needs to end now and this is the easiest way to do it, is to get everyone to sign on and agree that hazing needs to die.”

Two-hundred Penn State students signed the pledge on Wednesday. More than 7,800 are part of Greek life.
