WPSU’s Health Minute is a collaboration with Penn State’s Ross and Carol Nese College of Nursing.
April is National Minority Health Month.
Whether defined by ethnicity, race, disability, income, sex, gender, or geography, minority populations in America can experience exponentially higher rates of various diseases and ailments. These disparities are often caused by inequities in health care availability and cost, and mistrust of the system.
According to the National Institute of Minority and Health Disparities, some ways to help combat these issues are to encourage action through health education, promote yearly health checkups and routine screenings, and become a steward of mental health awareness.
