UPDATE: Penn State UP COVID-19 Cases Up Nearly 300 As Centre County Cases Pass 2,000

Penn State is reporting a 294-case increase of COVID-19 among students at University Park since it last updated its coronavirus dashboardon Friday.

 

It brings the total number of cases to 1,665 students at University Park. The dashboard lists 23 cases among students at Penn State Altoona, with 17 still active. There are 33 students in quarantine at that campus.

 

The continued growth in cases among Penn State students comes as Centre County case numbers also continue to climb. According to the state Department of Health update on Tuesday, the number of COVID-19 cases in Centre County has increased by 195, the second largest jump in the county since the pandemic began.

 

Centre County has 2,031 known cases of COVID-19 — 1,969 confirmed and 62 probable cases. That’s up from 1,836 on Monday. 

 

Most of the county’s increase is in the State College area 16801 zip code and Penn State’s 16802 zip code. 

 

According to the Department of Health, there are: 

 

  • 1,264 confirmed and 27 probable cases in the State College area's 16801 zip code, next to Penn State. That’s up 151 cases from 1,113 confirmed and 26 probable on Monday.

  • 270 confirmed cases and 1-4 probable cases in the 16802 zip code, Penn State’s University Park campus. That’s up from 248 confirmed cases and 1-4 probables Monday.

  • 125 confirmed cases and 7 probable cases in the nearby 16803 zip code. That’s up from 112 confirmed and 7 probable cases Monday.

 
The Penn State cases include 613 active cases and 1,052 that are no longer active. According to the university’s dashboard, 111 students at University Park are in isolation with the virus and 58 with possible exposure are in quarantine.

 

Only one employee at University Park has tested positive, according to the dashboard. It says 700 random tests have been done on employees, with results pending on 36.

 

University leaders have said so far they do not see the need to move to fully remote learning either temporarily or for the rest of the semester. 

The largest one-day increase in Centre County was a 212-case jump on Sept. 15.Statewide, there are a total of 151,646 confirmed and probable cases.
