Thousands Show Up To Tour New State High Building

A few thousand people showed up for the State College Area High School open house on Saturday. Community members toured the new building, many for the first time.

Nick Gibson, a senior at State High, led tour groups through the new building.

“Oh, I love the new school,” Gibson said. “I think it’s just a fantastic building, and it’s only half done. The outdoor auditorium will be really cool. But everything I’ve seen so far I love.”

The new cafeteria and the renovated south auditorium just opened in the past week. Students first started using many of the regular classrooms in January. In all, construction is about sixty percent done.

“Oh, my. I would love to go here now,” said Susan Long, who graduated from State High in 1993. “There’s just so many more upgrades. It’s daunting, though. There’s a lot to see.”

Athletic and performing arts areas, counseling offices and the library are in the next phase of construction. The Delta Program building will be constructed across the street. The $137 million project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2019.
