Health Minute: Food Deserts

Health Minute logo

WPSU’s Health Minute is a collaboration with Penn State’s Ross and Carol Nese College of Nursing.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, food deserts are areas that have limited access to affordable and nutritious food like fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Food deserts are often found in areas with low-income households and limited public transportation. People of all ages living in food deserts are more prone to health conditions like obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. Local leaders can work to improve food access in these areas.

Backyard and community gardens, local food markets, food buying clubs, and bus stop farmers markets are some local solutions to food deserts. For more information about food deserts visit the USDA Economic Research Service.
