Penn State Evicts Protestors From Toll Brothers Development Site

Penn State employees remove canopies belonging to members of the Nittany Valley Watershed Coalition from the site the university has sold to Toll Brothers for a student housing development.

Penn State has followed through on its warning to protestors of a proposed housing development on Whitehall Road in State College. The university evicted the group Wednesday morning.

Penn State removed protestors’ canopies from the site, but the group hoping to stop the sale of Penn State property to Toll Brothers hasn’t gone far. The Nittany Valley Watershed Coalition moved its other signs and chairs to the neighboring property, a church.

David Stone and others are hoping Toll Brothers and Penn State will agree on another development site. One possibility is land off West College Avenue and Blue Course Drive.

“I do appreciate Penn State communicating in so far as they have. I wish they could be more clear about -- that their hearts and souls were into making this work,” Stone said. “It worries me a little bit that maybe we haven’t made a good argument, maybe we haven’t convinced them, but they’re at least going ahead with negotiations.”

A university spokeswoman said Toll Brothers is reviewing potential alternative sites and a follow-up meeting with Toll Brothers and Nittany Valley Watershed Coalition is expected. But, she noted, there is still a sales agreement in place for the 46.5 acres along Whitehall Road.
