Snow from the Sierra Nevada Mountains is essential for providing drinking water for one-third of California.
Water officials traditionally calculate how much snowpack there is by manually measuring it on the ground. But the state is teaming up with NASA for a four-year pilot project to use new technology to measure snowpack depth that is believed to be more accurate.
