ISIS fighters seized a string of Syrian villages from rival insurgents north of Aleppo on Friday. The successful surprise attack came despite intensive Russian airstrikes that Moscow says are targeting militants.
Meanwhile, Iranian state media reported that a senior commander in Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guard was killed by the Islamic State group near Aleppo.
