Senate Holds Hearings On Secretary Of Defense Nominee

President Obama Nominates Ashton Carter To Replace Hagel As Defense Secretary

Ashton Carter, President Obama’s choice to replace Chuck Hagel, is appearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee today.

If approved, Carter would succeed Chuck Hagel, who resigned in November, under pressure from the White House according to some reports.

The next Pentagon chief says he would consider changing the current plans for withdrawing all U.S. troops from Afghanistan by the end of next year if security conditions worsen.

NPR’s Pentagon correspondent Tom Bowman tells Here & Now‘s Jeremy Hobson that Chuck Hagel got the job despite a poor performance in his confirmation hearing.
