You’re listening to WPSU’s Health Minute, a collaboration with Penn State’s College of Nursing.
The Great American Smokeout is this Thursday. It’s an annual intervention that challenges people to quit smoking and vaping for one day.
According to the American Lung Association, smoking causes nearly half a million deaths per year, making it the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. The American Cancer Society confirms there is no safe form of tobacco, including vaping. And with winter coming, smokers and vapers have a higher risk for developing breathing problems due to cold weather and viral infection.
To learn more about the Great American Smokeout or ways to quit tobacco use, visit smokefree.gov or call your state quitline at 1-800-QUITNOW.
