Halloween Haunts in Central Pennsylvania

As Halloween approaches, there is no shortage of thrills and chills to enjoy around Central Pennsylvania. Here are a few highlights from WPSU’s Community Calendar:

The Altoona Symphony takes on a vampire’s soundtrack in "Nosferatu: a Symphony of Horror."

You can see classic 1920’s vampire film, “Nosferatu,” in all its gory glory, Saturday evening at the historic Mishler Theatre in Altoona.  As the film plays, the orchestra will accompany it with Hans Erdman’s original 1920s musical score, as reconstructed by German composer Berndt Heller.  The Altoona Symphony tells us this is the first screening with the original score in the United States! Penn State Altoona lecturer Dr. Timothy Melbinger will give a pre-concert talk at 6:30pm.  Click here for details

Clearfield Arts Studio Theatre (CAST) Presents "The Rocky Horror Show"

It’s the stage rock ’n’ roll musical version of the classic cult film that takes newlyweds Brad and Janet to the castle of Dr. Frank ’N’ Furter for a hilariously terrifying night.  There are 10 p.m. performances on Saturday, October 28 and on Halloween Night, Tuesday, October 31 at the CAST building in Clearfield.  CAST cautions that the show is for mature audiences only.  Click here for details.

PSU Forensic Science Club Haunted House

The Penn State Forensic Science Club will hold its annual Haunted House tonight through Saturday night from 8 p.m. to midnight at Pine and Spruce Cottages on Penn State’s University Park Campus. A portion of the proceeds goes to H.E.A.R.T (Hope Exists After Rape Trauma). The cottages will be transformed into a nuclear fallout zone.  Click here for details.

The Final Departure of the "Terror Trolley"

You ride with the ghouls on the Terror Trolley Saturday night at Rockhill Trolley Museum in Rockhill Furnace.  You’ll hear the story of a trolley that never returned and passengers who were never seen again. The ride is not recommended for children under 12 years old. Trolleys run Saturday evening from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. Click here for details.

Penn State Golf Courses Host a Halloween "Par-Tee"

"Par-tee." Get it? In fact, Penn State Golf Courses don’t stop there. They call it “fangtastic.” A little birdie told us there will be haunted cart rides, “Golf-Zilla,” mini-golf and pumpkin decorating. The event is free and runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Sunday. So don’t just putter around at home on Sunday. Get out and celebrate Halloween! Click here for details.

Juniata Valley's Haunted School

Juniata Valley High School in Alexandria is haunted this weekend, for a good cause. Proceeds will go to the Salvation Army from the school’s first ever Haunted School. And because fright works up an appetite, baked goods and drinks will be provided. The fearful festivities are recommended for age 13 and up. Click here for details.

The Addams Family

Mount Nittany Middle School’s drama club gets into the seasonal spirit with a production of “The Addams Family,” with evening performances Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m., with a final matinee this Sunday at 2 p.m. at Mt. Nittany Middle School.  Click here for details.

Philipsburg’s Free Haunted House

Ever seen a car dealership transformed into a Halloween haunt? The “7th Annual Free Haunted House” will be held Friday and Saturday from 7 to 10 p.m. at Murarik Motorsports in Philipsburg. There will be games and prizes for younger kids who don’t want to tour the haunted house (some content is not suitable for small children).  Adult supervision is required.  Click here for details.

Astronomy on Tap Presents Spooky Space!

Halloween is a time to eat, drink and be scary, so Penn State Astronomers invite you to “Spooky Science!” Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Happy Valley Brewing Company in State College.  As part of the “Astronomy on Tap” series, the astronomers promise to regale you with tales of “active galactic nuclei, the hungry monsters lurking in the centers of galaxies, gamma ray bursts and the universe's death ray!” Click here for details.

You’ll find other seasonal events as well on WPSU’s community calendarHappy haunting!
