A video depicting the beheadings of 21 Egyptian Christian men on the beach in Libya is the latest act of brutal violence publicized by the group that call itself the Islamic State.
Graeme Wood, a contributing editor at The Atlantic, writes in his cover story about how ISIS, also called ISIL, is a dangerous religious group that rejects peace and has a hunger for genocide.
Wood writes, “We have misunderstood the nature of the Islamic State in at least two ways.” He speaks Here & Now’s Jeremy Hobson about how understanding ISIS’s intentions – and how they are as distinct from al-Qaida’s – is crucial to efforts to combat the group.
