Penn State Taiko hosted a public taiko drum workshop Sunday, Jan. 28. The event drew families and children eager to learn the basics of taiko.
Taiko is an ancient Japanese form of percussion that uses large drums. Workshop participants learned how to stand with a drum, how to hit the drum and how to play some basic taiko rhythms.
Colin Turley, a Penn State graduate student and one of the workshop leaders, said taiko is a great way to get out energy.
“It’s a lot of fun,” he said. “It’s a great way if you have energy or anger or anything else, you can just play a drum for a few hours and you feel a lot better.”
Penn State Taiko hosted the workshop to get people excited about taiko and to prepare them for Japan’s Yamato taiko drumming concert on Jan. 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for Performing Arts’ Eisenhower Auditorium.
