Health Minute: Maintaining Mental Health During the Holidays

Health Minute logo

WPSU’s Health Minute is a collaboration with Penn State’s Ross and Carol Nese College of Nursing.

As the leaves fall and temperatures drop, many begin preparing for the holidays and for an unwelcome guest: stress.

According to the American Psychological Association, about 1 in 3 people said their stress level increases during the holidays. The good news is there are practical tips to reduce stress.

It’s important to begin by acknowledging your feelings and reflecting on how the holidays affect your emotions. Next, start planning by making a list of holiday tasks and setting aside time to complete them. Make sure to schedule time for yourself.

Be realistic and say “no” when necessary. Seek professional help, if needed, to manage stress levels. Preparing for the holidays can reduce unwanted stress and allow you to enjoy the season.
