Free showings of the movie Hidden Figures have popped up across the country to empower young girls. The event reached the State Theatre in downtown State College on Saturday.

Hidden Figures tells the story of a team of female African American mathematicians who played a huge part in the success of the early stages of the NASA program.

Irene Miller raised over $1,500 on Go Fund Me to provide this free showing to about 300 attendees.

“We have a wide range of people attending — all ages, all genders, all passions, all educational interest areas — so whether you are into math or engineering or NASA or not, you’re definitely going to come away from this movie thinking about your dreams and knowing that you can achieve them,” Miller said.

Karen Krok said she believes exposing her two elementary aged daughters to a movie like this is important.

“I think seeing this just lets them know that no matter what their dreams are, no matter what obstacles, they can try and achieve them,” Krok said.

Participants were also able to pick a book, all of which featured strong female characters, to take home with them.
