Members of the Penn State community gathered on Old Main lawn Tuesday to show opposition to president-elect Donald Trump. Many of the protestors said they were concerned by increasing divisiveness in the United States.
A group of students started marching from the HUB Robeson Center on Penn State’s University Park campus on Tuesday. They circled around central campus for about ten minutes, holding signs and doing chants such as “Donald Trump, go away, racist, sexist, anti-gay” and “say it loud, say it clear, immigrants are welcome here.”
When they arrived at the Old Main lawn, they were joined by hundreds of students as part of the “Not My President” protest.
The protest was hosted by Penn State’s Queer and Trans People of Color organization. The students echoed the battle cry of protestors in major cities across the country.
Over 1,000 people participated in the peaceful protest. After more than half an hour on the Old Main lawn, the protest moved back to the HUB to continue chanting and singing.
Organizer Nadia Souada said she has heard reports of increasing hate and hostility against minorities since the election. She said she doesn’t see herself making peace with the election outcome.
"The moment that you get comfortable is the moment that you allow a lot of things to happen," Souada said. "It’s like the stages of grief, so right now I am just at the angry stage."
