Free parking at Penn State’s Arboretum is coming to an end as the university begins building the new Palmer Museum of Art this summer.
Beginning July 19, free visitor parking will no longer be available at the Arboretum’s parking lot along Bigler Road. Instead, guests are asked to park across the street in a paid lot near the Lewis Katz Building.
The Arboretum lot will be removed as construction for the new Palmer Museum of Art begins this summer. The new $85 million facility is expected to open by fall 2023.
No new parking lots were included in plans for the museum that were finalized in May.
Parking at the Katz Building lot will cost $1 an hour. Weekend visitors can purchase all-day parking for a flat $8 fee.
Parking permit holders can use the Katz Building lot on weekdays after 4 p.m. and all day on weekends outside football game days. Visitors can park for a maximum of two hours once Penn State classes are in sessions this fall and spring.
The Arboretum’s lot was one of the last remaining free parking areas on campus. In 2019, Penn State created a new policy requiring 24/7 parking permits for its “core campus lots.”
While construction continues, Penn State will install ADA-accessible walkways along Bigler Road to help visitors enter the Arboretum. The university will also put up new stop signs to help control traffic.
