A group of State College community members is holding a fundraiser this weekend for Schlow Library. The library lost more than 1,000 books to water damage this week when a frozen sprinkler pipe burst Monday at Schlow Library, causing extensive damage.
According to library director, Cathi Alloway, more than 1,500 books, 600 protective cases for audio books and media and $1,100 dollars worth of educational toys were lost due to water damage.
Kate Hoffman is an English teacher at State College High School. She wanted to take action when she saw the story in the Centre Daily Times.
“When I read the article," said Hoffman. "It said that the ‘biography’ section and the ‘young adult’ section had both been damaged and my heart kind of hurt a little bit there because I teach teenagers and I know a lot of them use the YA section a lot…. I use the YA section a lot.”
Hoffman and her colleagues put together a “canning” fundraiser for the library in the spirit of THON, which is also this weekend. They’ll be downtown collecting money to replace the books all day Saturday.
