The Valentine-Beaver Tenant Farmhouse: A Remarkable Relic of Bellefonte’s Agricultural Heritage
The Valentine-Beaver Tenant Farmhouse: A Remarkable Relic of Bellefonte’s Agricultural Heritage
The presentation, an illustrated lecture by historian Philip Ruth, chair of the BHCA’s Historic Preservation Committee, will delve into a less-heralded facet of Bellefonte’s past, embodied in a nineteenth-century stone farmhouse standing on the borough’s edge. Mr. Ruth will trace the building’s history as documented in primary sources such as land warrants, surveys, patents, maps, deeds, estate records, newspaper reports, tax assessment ledgers, census schedules, and photographs. The unfolding story will reach beyond agriculture to touch on local geology, geography, human settlement, and industry—demonstrating how regional history can be revealed through the study of a single structure.
