Social Constructions of Self

Social Constructions of Self

Over the years, I have photographed my own image as if I were studying a stranger who never quite leaves. Sometimes it appears as a reflection in glass, a shadow against the wall, or as an image reflected in a random storefront’s window, between the grasses across a mountainside, or in my bathroom mirror. The idea was not to show a face, but to question the idea of having one. These images are not self-portraits in the traditional sense; they are conversations with the mirrors that follow me across rooms, streets, cities, and countries.
I have come to believe that one’s self is not something that is found, but rather something built through the social constructions that define us or by which we define ourselves. When one leaves all else behind, what remains is the structure of the self that travels with you, invisible yet heavy. This project does not aim to find a singular truth of one’s self identity and instead is meant to recognize its elasticity. This project will remain ongoing until I make my transition to the other side.
