Presented by Lisa Badger, Diane Shaffer, and Marsha Ann Tate, Ph.D. Emmanuel United Church of Christ (UCC) in Jacksonville, Pennsylvania, and its congregation have played a significant role in both the history of the Jacksonville area and the Nittany Valley as a whole. For example, Emmanuel UCC and its two sister churches in the Nittany Valley Charge of the United Church of Christ—Mt. Bethel (Lamar, PA) and Salona UCC—enjoy a unique historical connection with noted nineteenth century artist Annie Snyder and her family.
Given this rich legacy, several members and friends of Emmanuel UCC established an informal group dedicated to preserving the church’s past and sharing its rich legacy with the public. Using a combination of genealogical and historical research, together with historical reenactment, the group is helping pass on valuable insights into faith and families in the Nittany Valley over the last two centuries. For this presentation, group members Lisa Badger, Diane Shaffer, and Marsha Ann Tate will provide an overview of the group’s current projects. They will also discuss selected recently discovered documents and church records that may be of interest to genealogists. In addition, audience members will take a brief trip back in time to experience a glimpse of Nittany Valley’s past.
