Firewood for Good Program Boosted by Federal Grant
WOOD DONATIONS AND VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO HELP ELDERLY AND THOSE EXPERIENCING HEATING EMERGENCIES
On October 1, 2024, Firewood for Good, an outreach program of GBRVUMC, was awarded $10,000 to purchase firewood processing equipment to help meet the heating needs of community members in Centre County. The funding came from the Alliance for Green Heat, a non-profit organization chosen by the U.S. Forest Service in 2022 to administer a national program to support volunteer firewood banks.
Modeled after food banks, firewood banks depend on wood donated by tree trimmers, towns, and homeowners, businesses, and partnerships with local, State, and National Forests, to distribute to community members. There are more than 150 firewood banks around the country and each one is eligible for a grant to purchase equipment so that they can more efficiently process firewood.
Firewood for Good is actively looking for additional volunteers and sources of wood to meet its goals. To get involved as a volunteer, to provide wood, or if you know of someone in need of emergency firewood this winter call or email 814-355-2208 or gbrvmsecretary@gmail.com
