Brazilian Music Immersion - From Samba to Bossa Nova
Brazilian Music Immersion - From Samba to Bossa Nova
Brazilian Music Immersion is a three-part performance and history retrospective series led by Rio de Janeiro songwriter, guitarist, percussionist, and educator Dr. Luiz "Pepe" Barcellos, who has traveled the world leading Brazilian music workshops and sharing his experiences through interactive music-making. Hosted in Pine Grove Hall’s upstairs listening room, these intimate and engaging encounters will blend storytelling, live music, singing, body movement, and percussion, with Pepe exploring the roots of samba, the emergence of bossa nova, and placing Brazilian music within the context of today’s music scene. In the March 22nd encounter, Pepe will connect Afro-Brazilian cultural history, iconic recordings, carnival street culture, and his own experience performing and teaching Brazilian music. Whether you come to listen, move, sing, or simply enjoy the atmosphere, these sessions are designed to make everyone feel included and welcome. Currently, Barcellos is a Lecturer in Music Education at Penn State University, and he has performed at venues such as Chumley's, Woskob Gallery, Elk Creek, and Huntington Arts Center with Eric Ian Farmer.
