Are You a Librarian: Black Librarians and Freedom through Literacy

Are You a Librarian: Black Librarians and Freedom through Literacy

On Monday, October 20th, Pennsylvania State University Libraries will host a screening of Are You a Librarian: Black Librarians and Freedom through Literacy. The documentary, produced by Charlotte-based librarian Rodney Freeman, shines a light on the little-known history of Black librarianship in America. Through first-hand accounts and powerful historical storytelling, the film reveals how Black librarians have led the fight against censorship, book bans, and library workplace discrimination time and again, and continue to lead that fight today. The film also captures the ways in which Black librarians still face discrimination and even threats of violence, but remain steadfast in their resistance, resilience, and resolve. Are You a Librarian? features interviews and testimonials from several trailblazing Black librarians and historians across the country, including Dr. Carla Hayden, whom President Trump recently fired as Librarian of Congress, and President and Director of the Free Library of Philadelphia Kelly Richards. As part of the story, Freeman shares how throughout his career, he has been asked time and again by confused library patrons, “Are you a librarian?” But in this misguided question, Freeman sees a silver lining -- it inspired him to make this documentary. The screening is free and open to the public
