Anderson Lecture Series: Dr. Richard Kabitto: Narratives of Places—(re)Creating Local Art Histories

Dr. Richard Kabiito is an accomplished artist and educator who specializes in working with natural materials in mixed-media applications. He investigates the histories of local art experiences as content for his artistic research, exploring cultural artifacts and their connections to local geohistorical narratives. With a background in New Media pedagogies and recent forays into AI applications, Dr. Kabiito holds a Ph.D. from Aalto University in Finland, as well as a Master of Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Makerere University in Uganda. His journey as an artist began in Uganda, where he grew up in Kalisizo near the shores of Lake Victoria. Drawing inspiration from his rural surroundings, he crafted art using locally available materials such as bark, wood, banana plant stems, fibers, and wire. His sculptures and paintings, exhibited internationally, integrate Ugandan Indigenous knowledge. Dr. Richard Kabiito is a lecturer in the Department of Visual Communication Design and Multimedia at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda.
