On the Friday morning after Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf ordered all businesses that are not considered “life-sustaining” to close their physical locations, Todd Colocino received the news that he was laid off. 

The certified welding inspector for a civil engineering firm in State College has been laid off before during the Great Recession. But this time he feels less certain.

St. Marys Light Bulb Plant Closure Will Impact Nearly 200 Workers

A light bulb plant in Elk County will close this October, LEDVANCE LLC announced on April 23. An estimated 175 workers in St. Marys will be affected by the closure.

In a statement, the company — which used to be known as Sylvania — said sales for traditional light bulbs have declined due to a switch to LED lights; meanwhile, the demand for LED bulbs also dropped because of their longevity.

Pennsylvania’s Population Quickly Becoming Older, Slowly More Diverse

Following national trends, Pennsylvania’s population is getting older and slowly becoming more diverse according to the latest statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Nearly one-third of all Pennsylvania residents were 55 years or older in 2017, ranking it seventh among states for the highest median age in the country at about 41 years old. The national median age is 38 years old.
