The office of the Coroner of Centre County said the death of a 17-year-old who died at an off-campus house in State College last month was accidental.

Deputy Coroner Debra Smeal reported on November 22 that an autopsy found that John “Jack” Schoenig died from chemical asphyxia due to nitrous oxide. The report also said a toxicology report did not detect any alcohol in the teen’s system.

Schoenig was a high school senior at Cathedral Prep School in Erie.

A Penn State fraternity has been put on “interim suspension,” after a 17-year-old died Saturday night at an off-campus house in State College. The university said Tuesday the West College Avenue house is allegedly occupied by Chi Phi members, although it is not the fraternity’s official house.

Erie News Now reported that high school Senior John “Jack” Schoenig was a student at Cathedral Prep School in Erie. Schoenig and friends were visiting State College. Erie News Now reported Schoenig is listed as a senior and forward on the Cathedral Prep hockey team.

John Lord, president of the Interfraternity Council, or IFC, at Penn State, said the council’s role is to govern and represent the 37 fraternity chapters.

But, Lord said, when the university revokes recognition of a chapter, the IFC also loses grip on its oversight.

The Pennsylvania Attorney General’s office has dropped all assault charges and some involuntary manslaughter charges in the hazing case in relation to the death of Penn State student Timothy Piazza.

Chief Deputy Attorney General Brian Zarallo filed a notice in court Thursday, saying the prosecutors will drop all aggravated assault and simple assault charges, but will continue to press involuntary manslaughter charges against five defendants.

Rush. It’s that time of year when students looking to join a fraternity or sorority go through pledging events that are part of Greek life on college campuses.

At Penn State, the administration is tightening the controls on pledging and how it will be monitored, after student Timothy Piazza died in February at Beta Theta Pi’s bid acceptance night. President Eric Barron spoke about those changes and the university’s response to fraternity hazing and drinking earlier this year.
