Take Note: Remembering NPR Sports Commentator Frank Deford

Longtime NPR sports commentator Frank Deford.

Welcome to Take Note on WPSU, I’m Patty Satalia. Longtime NPR sports commentator Frank Deford died on Sunday. WPSU talked with him in 2007. Among the most celebrated and versatile writers in the country, Deford's work appeared in virtually every medium. He was Senior Contributing Editor at Sports Illustrated, a correspondent on the HBO show, “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel,” and his commentaries were heard Wednesdays on NPR’s “Morning Edition” starting in 1980 and ending just a few weeks ago. He was voted Sportswriter of the Year six times by his peers. And in 2013, President Barack Obama awarded him the National Humanities Medal. Obama honored him for “transforming how we think about sports.”

Patty Satalia was a senior producer/host for WPSU-TV and FM from 1987 to 2017. Prior to joining Penn State Public Broadcasting, she worked in commercial television in Pittsburgh, first as a film editor and fill-in capsule news anchor for WPGH-TV, and later, for WPTT-TV as public affairs director and co-host of the talk-show, People, Places and Things.
