Health Minute: Winter Sports

Health Minute logo

TRANSCRIPT:

You're listening to WPSU's Health Minute, a collaboration with Penn State's College of Nursing.

If you're planning to hit the slopes, lace up the ice skates, or go sledding, here are some tips for staying safe:

  • Go in groups or carry a cell phone in case of emergency.
  • Wear clothing that will maintain your body temperature while allowing for movement and flexibility.
  • Take the time to warm up.
  • Use proper safety equipment such as helmets and pads.
  • Take regular breaks to hydrate and eat.
  • Get familiar with your surroundings and avoid hazards.
  • Know your limits and stay where others can see and hear you.
  • Keep an eye on the weather; winter weather can change quickly.
  • End your outdoor activity when conditions worsen.

Taking measures to prevent injury will allow you to enjoy your winter activities all season long. Join us next week for WPSU's Health Minute. For more episodes, visit wpsu.org/healthminute.

I'm Cheraine Stanford, WPSU.
