Student Climate Action Day

Student Climate Action Day

Student and community environmental advocacy groups will come together on Penn State’s campus October 17, 2021, from 1 to 4 p.m. for Student Climate Action Day. Sponsored by Penn State’s Eco-Action and the Sierra Club’s Moshannon Group, Centre region high school students and Penn State students will collaborate on a series of more than a dozen specific actions that can be taken immediately to impact climate change. Penn State student organizations who have already agreed to participate include: State College Sunrise Group, Biorenewable Systems Club, Project PAWS, Penn State Sustainability Institute, Eco Reps, UPUA Sustainability, and Eco-Action. From the community, participants include: Centre Bikes, The Citizens Climate Lobby, Penn Environment, PA Interfaith Power & Light, the Nittany Valley Environmental Coalition, and the Sierra Club. Some examples of the day’s activities include: how to identify and remove non-native species; organizing student sustainability initiatives with their schools; starting a sustainability conversation with a family member or friend; mapping bike routes as an alternative to driving; identifying buildings and facilities that could accommodate solar panels; outreach to corporations and organizations to accelerate the transition to green energy. Climate action stations will be set up in the outdoor area adjacent to the Berkey Creamery. High school students must be accompanied by a school or parent chaperone. In the event of inclement weather, we are planning to hold a virtual event via Zoom. Details would be available 24 hours in advance.
