“Civic Saturday” will take place in Tionesta this weekend as part of a nationwide project aimed at getting communities to reflect on civic culture and what it means to be an active citizen.
Carmina Taylor is a Citizen’s University Civic Saturday Fellow. This is her first time hosting a Civic Saturday. She said it’s a nonpartisan effort to get people engaged in their communities.
“I want people to coalesce around what it means to be a citizen and how you exercise that, and not make it political. Encourage people to talk to their neighbors, talk to candidates, talk to people that are running for office,” Taylor said.
She hopes the event will bring people together as Pennsylvanians.
“We need to listen to one another. We need to absorb one another. We need to be open to different voices and different perspectives,” Taylor said.
The event will also feature live music, a “civic sermon” and poetry. Civic Saturday will run from 7-9 p.m. on Saturday, at West Forest High School in Tionesta. Those interested in attending can register for free on Eventbrite.
