Florida COVID-19 Cases Rise As Cruise Ship Looms Off Coast

Florida’s COVID-19 cases have surged to nearly 7,000. Still, Gov. Ron DeSantis has resisted calls for a statewide stay-at-home order. He has ordered some counties in the state’s south to stay home, leaving further orders in the rest of the state up to local governments.

Now, a cruise ship filled with COVID-19 patients idles off the state’s coast, pleading for permission to dock. People on the ship say they need medical attention they can’t get on board, but state and local governments worry the influx of patients would overwhelm Florida’s hospital capacity.

WLRN’s Caitie Switalski (@caitielee0917) talks to host Jeremy Hobson about the situation in southern Florida.
