(Harrisburg) -- Pennsylvania's drug overdose rate is more than twice the national average.

The opioid crisis is a focal point in the primary elections for the 12th Congressional District, which includes Centre, Mifflin, Clinton and Potter counties.

Bradford County Commissioner Doug McLinko is challenging GOP incumbent Tom Marino in Tuesday's primary.

He said Marino just isn't working for the people of the district.

The two Democratic candidates running for the U.S. House 12th Congressional district in Pennsylvania met for a debate Thursday night.

Among the reasons Judy Herschel said she’s running in the Democratic primary is to be a voice for the community on topics many feel are being ignored. Those include health care, jobs, public education and the opioid crisis.

“I believe that we working individuals deserve a voice in Washington, and I’m ready to get in there and get the job done," Herschel said.

On Nov. 16, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Republican tax plan. It would make changes including counting graduate scholarships and tuition discounts as taxable income. That has raised concerns for some, including the administration at Penn State.
