This I Believe: I Believe In Mindful Attentiveness

I believe in the small joy of washing with carrot-ginger soap.

I believe in baking five-grain rye bread with cracked rye berries, naturally leavened with sourdough and baked on a hot stone. Taking baths in the dark with candlelight. Canning dill green beans and pickling beets.

I believe in picnicking by wooded streams while waiting for my wife and friends to finish hiking, which I don’t believe in.

A few thousand people showed up for the State College Area High School open house on Saturday. Community members toured the new building, many for the first time.

Nick Gibson, a senior at State High, led tour groups through the new building.

“Oh, I love the new school,” Gibson said. “I think it’s just a fantastic building, and it’s only half done. The outdoor auditorium will be really cool. But everything I’ve seen so far I love.”

After 18 months of waiting, the new State High buildings on the south side of Westerly Parkway opened their doors on Monday. All of the classrooms have moved to the new facility, but construction will continue into summer 2019.

State High held a pep rally, and the energy level was high.

Jeff Straub is a senior architect on the project. He said the new facilities focus on providing more space for small group instruction and one-on-one interaction.

Many people are concerned with the environmental impacts of Marcellus Shale Drilling. A group of high school teachers from State College are learning how to keep an eye on the quality of local rivers and streams so they can teach the skill to their students.

Recently, a group of earth science teachers from State College Area High School splashed through Black Moshannon Creek. Some wore waders, others just rolled up their pants to wade through the clear, rushing water.
