Penn State Puts 'All In' Commemorative Piece On Hold

All In commemorative piece concept drawing

In August, Penn State unveiled the design for a commemorative sculpture next to Old Main that would celebrate diversity and inclusion.

The piece was going to be installed in spring 2018. It was meant to call to mind a forest and draw visitors in to reflect on themselves and others.

But, Penn State confirmed it is shelving the project — at least for now.

University spokeswoman Lisa Powers said “it has become clear that many student leaders would like to reconsider the commemorative” project.

The piece had a price tag of up to $500,000. It had student critics who said the money could be better spent. It was part of “All In,” a Penn State initiative focused on diversity and inclusion.

Student Jahnya Hudson said she thought the sculpture was a way for people to know Penn State was trying to bring diversity to campus.

“I understand that putting up an art piece isn’t an action, but at least it’s raising more awareness that they’re actually trying,” Hudson said.

Powers said Penn State President Eric Barron will be in touch with the art committee, artist and student leaders about the next steps.
