The Folk Show Road Show: The Early Mays, and Ari and Mia Friedman

FSRS20180116EarlyMaysH2.mp3
The Early Mays, followed by Ari and Mia Freedman in Hour 2 of the Jan 16, 2017 broadcast of the Folk Show Road Show.

The Early Mays  feature Appalachian-inspired songs built on deep country sensibilities, masterful three part vocal harmonies and a sweet old-time sound that includes fiddle, banjo and guitar, and harmonium.

In 2016  they took home the blue ribbon in the Neo-Traditional Band Competition at Clifftop Appalachian String Band Music Festival and this past August appeared on NPR’s Mountain Stage.  Their latest release Chase the Sun climbed to the #1 position on the National Folk-DJ Charts.

We recorded the Early Mays just a few weeks ago, on Dec 9, 2017.  The concert was at the Center for Well Being in Lemont,  part of the Acoustic Brew Concert Series.  Their vocal harmonies and traditional instruments were a particularly good fit in the historic church turned yoga studio,  and many of their songs provide a great antidote to this cold and dark time of year!

Mel DeYoung hosts Morning Edition on WPSU and is in the broadcast booth before 5am each weekday. That means that if he's being sensible he goes to sleep way earlier than normal people do. The differences don't end there, but you'll have to chat with Mel sometime to understand the full depth of his abnormality.
