The Folk Show Road Show: Bryan Bowers and Jimmy Gaudreau & Moondi Klein

Bowers

The first hour focuses on Bryan Bowers, recorded at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lewistown, part of the Mini-Mountain Laurel Concert Series.
Bryan Bowers musical life's journey has taken him from a childhood in Virginia where he hung around field workers and gandy dancers and learned to sing old call-and-answer songs, to discovering his musical destiny. Bowers is widely recognized as a leading virtuoso on the autoharp. In tonight's broadcast, you'll get an idea of why in 1993, Bryan was inducted into the Autoharp Hall of Fame along with Carter family members Maybelle and Sara Carter.

Along with his instrumental virtuosity and powerful singing voice,  Bowers is a captivating storyteller and  performer,  who draws on decades of performances, and his concert in Lewistown captures him in great form. You'll hear stories of about the Carter Family,  about how he came to learn the song "Life is hardest when you're dumb" .

A little after 9PM, we turn to Jimmy Gaudreau and Moondi Klein,  recorded at the Wagon Shed Concert Series in New Freedom, PA .
The intimate space of the Wagon Shed Concert series is just right for this duo.  They're relaxed as they trade instrumental melody lines and vocal harmonies, and share a story from a trip to Scotland.  Not bluegrass, not country, not folk, and not alt.anything either; On guitar and mandolin, ….these veterans of the Country Gentlemen, the Tony Rice Unit, the Seldom Scene, and Chesapeake, ... create an uncluttered vocal and instrumental blend '''.  "An inspired mix of songs, and a style that fuses ’30s-style brother harmonies with new acoustic music…"

Mel DeYoung hosts Morning Edition on WPSU and is in the broadcast booth before 5am each weekday. That means that if he's being sensible he goes to sleep way earlier than normal people do. The differences don't end there, but you'll have to chat with Mel sometime to understand the full depth of his abnormality.
