A study in San Antonio is designed to determine if a technique called Family Nurture Intervention could help babies who spend their first days in the neonatal intensive care unit.

The technique coaches new mothers to develop physical and emotional bonds with their babies. Researchers believe it may prevent developmental, learning or behavior problems, including autism.
